Carbomer is a white loose powder, slightly acidic, soluble in water to form a gel, and can produce a high-efficiency thickening effect at a very low dosage (conventional dosage 0.2-1%), thus preparing a very good emulsions, creams, gels and transdermal preparations with a wide viscosity range and different rheological properties; the pH is usually 2.5-4.0 according to the concentration, and it is usually necessary to add a neutralizing agent to adjust the pH to near neutral. Different carbomers have slightly different properties. Compared with 940, carbomer 980 has larger polymer molecules. Under different conditions such as concentration, temperature, pH, etc., its viscosity changes and rheological changes behave differently, each of them has different ionic resistance and shear resistance.
In addition to the above physical and chemical differences, Carbomer 980 and 940 also have differences in application, such as in skin care lotions or gels:
1. Carbomer 980 behaves in addition to elasticity under dynamic vibration of stress, carbomer 940 is worse but easier to apply evenly.
2. When the presence or concentration of ions increases, the transparency of carbomer 980 and 940 is very small, but the resistance of carbomer 980 to ions is higher than that of carbomer 940, so carbomer 980 can provide a relatively higher viscosity and yield value when the ions increase.
3. The skin feel caused by different carbomers is different. Carbomer 980 has a slight elasticity when it is initially applied and the skin feels moisturized and smooth. It is suitable for medium or partial formulas that feel rich, and it is not sticky after use; It feels clear and suitable for refreshing formula.
