Carbomer, also known as carbopol, is a kind of polymer crosslinked polyacrylic acid polymer, usually used as thickening agent, gel agent, emulsifier in daily chemical products, but also can be used for pharmaceutical exciphants as skeleton materials, with the role of a sustained-release agent or adhesive, dispersant, in many fields has broad prospects.

Carbomer is used as a chemical sustained-release agent
Carbomer has been widely used as a chemical sustained-release agent, both orally and externally. It is in the stage of rapid development and research in China.
In this paper, a kind of toxin carbomer gel is taken as an example to illustrate the application characteristics, drug release mechanism, preparation technology, drug release influencing factors and practical application of carbomer sustained release agent.
Analogous toxins, namely attenuant toxins and denaturing toxins, refer to some of the toxins that have lost their original toxicity after denaturation or chemical modification but still retain their immunogenicity.
After detoxification treatment, the toxoid toxicity disappears, but it can still stimulate the human body to produce antitoxin and play an immune role.
Carbomer is a sustained release agent for tetanus toxoid
Bacterial exotoxin is treated with 0.3%~0.4% formaldehyde to remove its toxicity and can be made into toxoid, tetanus (Clostridium tetanus) toxoid is one of them.
Study on its release in carbomer (using flocculent precipitation method) :
25Lf/mL of tetanus toxin was dissolved in phosphoric acid buffer and distilled water respectively, and the same concentration of 0.25%, 0.125% and 0.625% of capopol was added and fully mixed. Capopol was separated by NaCl precipitation method, and then supernatant and capopol precipitation were taken for flocculent reaction respectively.
The results showed that the content of tetanus toxoid in supernatant was very high, showing typical flocculent precipitates, while kapopp precipitates did not contain any tetanus toxoid, and flocculent reactions were negative.
This study preliminarily established the biological detection method of the product in Capop gel and the conditions of its dissolution in Capop gel.
It was determined that the capopp concentration in such release studies should not be higher than 0.25%.
In addition, there are many other drugs that use carbomer as a skeleton material or carrier. The drugs are evenly distributed in the carbomer gel and do not dissolve directly in the solution (blood, body fluids), but are released slowly to perform better.
