What is HEPES
The full chemical name of Hepes free acid (CAS number: 7365-45-9) is N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-piperazine ethane sulfonic acid (hereinafter referred to as "HEPES") is a zwitterionic biological buffer. It has physical properties including a white powdery appearance at room temperature and its excellent water solubility. 40 grams of HEPES can be completely dissolved in 100 ml of pure water at 20°C. Therefore, it is very easy to use and only needs to be dissolved in water. The scope of application is relatively wide, usually using its pH value for adjustment, cosmetics, cell culture, electrophoresis buffer, etc.
HEPES handling and storage recommendations
HEPES powder is resistant to high temperatures and has a melting point of up to 200°C, so it will not be degraded by autoclaving. According to relevant literature, if the HEPES water solution is exposed to ambient light for three hours, cytotoxic hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2) will be produced. Therefore, it should be noted that the HEPES water solution must be kept away from light to avoid affecting the experimental results.
