Luminol sodium salt is a white to light yellow crystalline powder, which is prepared by the reaction of luminol with sodium hydroxide. Luminol is one of the most commonly used liquid-phase chemiluminescence reagents. Since Albrecht first reported the chemiluminescence reaction of luminol and oxidant in alkaline solution in 1928, people have been very active in the study of the chemiluminescence system, which makes the chemiluminescence system be applied in many fields. Luminol sodium is one of the applications of luminol luminescent properties.

Luminol is one of the oldest and most commonly used reagents, which can be oxidized by peroxides under alkaline conditions and emit light at the same time. The redox reaction between luminol and peroxides requires catalysts, which are usually multivalent metal ions, peroxidases such as iron, horseradish peroxidase, etc. this method is commonly used to detect peroxides, heavy metals and peroxidases The method is based on peroxidase and glucose oxidase.
 
In general, the chemiluminescence reaction between luminol and hydrogen peroxide is very rapid in the presence of some catalysts. The most commonly used catalyst is metal ions. In a large concentration range, the concentration of metal ions is directly proportional to the luminous intensity, so that the chemiluminescence analysis of some metal ions can be carried out. With this reaction, the organic compounds containing metal ions can be analyzed, achieving high sensitivity. The second is to use the inhibition of organic compounds on luminol chemiluminescence reaction to determine the organic compounds which have quenching effect on chemiluminescence reaction. The third is indirect determination of inorganic or organic compounds by coupling reaction.

Luminescent principle of Luminol
First, sodium hypochlorite oxidizes luminol to make it glow;
 
Second, hydrogen peroxide reacts with sodium hypochlorite to generate oxygen to oxidize luminol and make it glow;
 
First, the reaction equation of sodium hypochlorite and hydrogen peroxide: NaCl + H2O2 = = NaCl + O2 + H2O;
 
Secondly, when luminol reacts with hydroxides, a double anion (dianion) is formed, which can be oxidized by the oxygen decomposed by hydrogen peroxide, and the product is an organic peroxide. The peroxide is very unstable, and immediately decomposes nitrogen (after luminol is oxidized by an organic oxidant such as dimethyl sulfoxide, it does not generate nitrogen, but nitrogen-containing organic matter), and generates excited 3-aminophthalic acid. In the transition from excited state to ground state, the released energy exists in the form of photons, and the wavelength is located in the blue part of visible light.
