Carbomer is a high-molecular polymer crosslinked with acrylic acid and allyl sucrose or propenyl pentaerythritol. It was first produced by G00drich in the United States under the trade name of Carbop (Carbop01). The 2005 edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia has been included. This product is a loose white powder, acidic, hygroscopic and special slightly odor, soluble in water, ethanol, and glycerin. The molecule contains 56% to 58% carboxyl groups, so it is weakly acidic. When the carbomer is dispersed in water, due to the repulsion between the negative charges generated by the ionization of the carboxyl group, the curled polymer stretches out and expands in volume. The pH of the 0.5% water dispersion is 2.7 to 3.5. The 1% water dispersion can be neutralized with alkaline substances to form a gel. The concentration of commonly used water dispersion is 0.1% to 3.0%. The viscosity of Carbomer 980 gel is positively related to the concentration. The higher the concentration, the higher the viscosity of the gel. Carbomer 980 at different concentrations is different from the previous initial pH. The higher the concentration, the lower the initial pH.
